The Roanoke College women were looking for their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference win when the Maroons hosted Bridgewater on Wednesday of this week. Results were too late for publication but Bridgewater came to town as one of five teams without an ODAC loss. RC was 0-2 in the conference with losses to Guilford and Shenandoah, who are also both 2-0.
The RC women moved to the good side of .500 last Saturday as they improved to 6-5 with a non-conference win over Warren Wilson. The Maroons just missed scoring 100 points as they took a 98-51 win over the Owls on Camper Appreciation Day.
The Maroons shot the ball well early in opening a 29-12 first quarter lead. From that point it was all Roanoke as they sent the Owls to their 14th loss in 15 games.
Ashley Fowler led Roanoke in points with her season high of 21 while Abigail Rice scored 13. Roanoke freshman Laila Staples picked up her first career double-double after tallying 11 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Her point total tied her career high, and she set a new career mark with her rebound total. Freshman Cecilia Robinson tallied a career high with her team leading 13 rebounds. Every Maroon that was available to play saw at least 10 minutes of floor time as coach Carla Flaherty substituted freely with a big lead.
The Maroons hosted the Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic on December 29 and 30 and finished second in the tournament. They defeated Geneva College in the opener, 80-60, but lost to Denison University in the championship game, 80-57. Fowler and Rice were named to the All-Tournament team from RC.
The Maroons will now play conference games for the rest of the season. They’ll host Eastern Mennonite on Saturday at 4:30 pm and head to Danville next Wednesday, January 14, to play Averett University.
