The Roanoke College baseball team will
have a doubleheader in Ashland Saturday
as they take on first place Randolph-Macon
in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference
showdown. Coming into the week the
Maroons were two games behind the first
place Yellowjackets with a Saturday doubleheader scheduled for noon, but their chances
of catching the leader were hurt when the
Maroons lost in Guilford Tuesday, 8-7.

The Maroons kept pace with RandolphMacon when they swept a doubleheader
from Virginia Wesleyan last Saturday at
Calfee Park in Pulaski, which served as RC’s
home field while the Salem Red Sox were
occupying Salem Memorial Ballpark. The
Maroons won by scores of 9-7 and 5-4.

In the opener five Maroons had two hits
each, Corey Coogan, Dylan Bonzon, Cayden
Freels, Sam Scharville and Nate Prince.
Anthony Sullivan threw and inning and
two-thirds of scoreless ball and Isaac Brooks
picked up a save as RC scored five runs in
the bottom of the eighth to take the lead.
In the nightcap Jackson Murphy pitched
six innings to pick up the win and Coogan,
Scharville, Hayden Giordano and Kyle
Moshier all had two hits for the Maroons.

With the sweep, combined with Tuesday’s
loss to Guilford, the Maroons are 13-7 in
the ODAC and 20-17 overall. RandolphMacon was 15-4 in the conference prior to
Tuesday’s game with Virginia Wesleyan,
and if the Jackets prevailed they clinch the
top seed for the coming ODAC tournament.
Roanoke was scheduled to play Pfeiffer at
Salem Memorial Ballpark in a non-district
game on Wednesday.
