The Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball tournament is down to four teams and the defending champion Roanoke College Maroons are among them

The Maroons swept the first two games of a best-of-three from Lynchburg College last Friday night at Salem Memorial Stadium to advance to this week’s four team double elimination tournament at Lynchburg City Stadium. RC will open Friday night at 7:30 pm against Virginia Wesleyan after a 4 pm game between Shenandoah and Randolph-Macon.

The tournament continues Saturday with Friday’s losers playing at noon, followed by Friday’s winnners meeting at 3:30 pm. At 7 pm the noon winner and the 3:30 pm loser play in an elimination game, the result leaving just two teams still alive.

The championship is Sunday at noon, and if the team still unbeaten through Saturday wins then the tournament is over. If the team with one loss through Saturday wins the Sunday noon game, then a second game will be played to determine the 2018 ODAC champion.

Roanoke comes in at 29-9 after taking two from Lynchburg to eliminate the Hornets. In the first game of the doubleheader last Firday the Maroons took a 10-1 win. RC pitchers Fletcher Mazzola and Ethan Delahunty combined to allow just four hits to the Hornets in the game. Mazzola moved to 4-0 on the season after giving up three hits and one earned run in five innings of work. Delahunty went the final four innings to pick up his second save of the year. He gave up just one hit.

Gavin Kandrick finished with three hits for RC, while Cody Shell, Eli Sumpter, Dean Hermanson and Jack Howard each had two hits for the Maroons. Shell finished with five RBI.

In the second game RC won 10-4 to end Lynchburg’s season.  Pat Burke picked up the win after going two innings in relief. He improved his record to 3-0 after giving up just one hit and striking out two.

All nine Maroons had at least one hit in the win. Hermanson, Howard,  Sam Watson, Sumpter and Will Smith each had a pair.
