The Roanoke College baseball team opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference play last Saturday with a sweep of Bridgewater at Salem Memorial Ballpark. The Maroons won 6-5 and 11-5 to improve to 10-2 overall.
In the opener Bridgewater held a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth. However, Roanoke was able to load the bases for freshman Hector Orozco, who doubled to drive in all three baserunners and tie the game. Then fellow freshman Michael Hetzel drove Orozco in with a double to walk off the Eagles.
Riley Fitzgerald picked up his second win season after pitching 3.2 innings of relief. Thomas Burgess made the start for RC and went 5.1 innings while allowing just two runs.
In the nightcap Noah Donaho led in RBIs with three after recording a pair of hits. Trevor Orth grabbed his first win of the year on the mound, pitching two relief innings in which he didn’t allow a run and struck out four.
The Maroons have non-conference games with SUNY Cobleskill this week before heading to Ashland Saturday for an ODAC doubleheader with Randolph-Macon, beginning at 1 pm.
