Roanoke wins Cregger Invitational over holiday break
The Roanoke College men’s basketball team will host Washington & Lee in a big Old Dominion Athletic Conference game Saturday. Tip-Off time is 2 pm at the Cregger Center in Salem.
The Maroons come into the week with an 8-3 overall record, pending a trip to Winchester on Wednesday to meet Shenandoah University. The Generals are off to a great start with a 10-1 record in the 2025 portion of their schedule.
It’s still early in the ODAC season but this is a big game. Roanoke is 1-1 in ODAC games with their loss coming to undefeated Randolph-Macon College, on the road, the first week of December. W&L is 2-0 in ODAC games and the Generals have yet to play Randolph-Macon. The only other team without an ODAC loss is Virginia Wesleyan at 2-0 in the conference and 7-4 overall.
The Maroons are coming off a championship in last week’s Cregger Invitational at RC. Roanoke hammered Husson College on the first day of tournament, 91-62, then defeated Wilkes College in the championship game, 81-54, as tournament MVP Jackson Bell scored a career-high 30 points.
Bell scored 20 points in the first half against Wilkes as Roanoke opened a 50-32 lead at intermission. The Maroons were never threatened in the second half as they cruised to the win.
RC’s Porter Stanley joined Bell on the All-Tournament Team with a career-high 13 points to go with seven rebounds. Caleb Franze contributed 14 points and five rebounds, Patrick Clevenger had eight points and seven rebounds and Marcus Morgan contributed in several stat categories with five points, five rebounds and four steals.
After Saturday’s game with Washington & Lee the Maroons will be back home next Wednesday, January 14, to host Hampden-Sydney in another big ODAC game. That one will begin at 7 pm.
