The Roanoke College women split their first two games of the season last weekend as they hosted the Roanoke Invitational at Kerr Stadium. Roanoke beat St. John Fisher on Friday, 1-0, but dropped a 2-1 decision to Brockport in overtime Saturday.
Salem’s Skyler Hayes scored the only goal of the game Friday night, using a header off a corner kick cross from Jillian Barnard 13 minutes into the contest in what proved to be the game winner. Chris Martin made four saves in net for the Maroons en route to the shutout. Roanoke held a 19-5 advantage in shots over the Cardinals and an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Ten different Maroons recorded shots in the contest.
On Saturday evening Kathryn Van Orden found the back of the net off a pass from Emily Whitaker, following a Brockport foul, to give Roanoke a 1-0 lead in the second half. The first half was played to a scoreless tie.
Van Orden tried to extend the lead with a shot that hit the post following another Brockport foul as the score remained 1-0. Then, with four minutes left, Brockport tied it up as Maddie Siclare curled a shot off a bad clear and placed the ball into the left side of the net to make it 1-1 to force overtime.
Two minutes into the first overtime period, Hailey Davis missed high on a breakaway shot to keep it tied. Ellie Schad hit the post at the 8:15 mark in the second overtime period before Siclare scored the game winner with 6:19 left on the clock. The winning goal came on a free kick following a foul just outside the box.
Roanoke owned a 15-8 advantage in shots while each team tallied six cornerkicks on the night.
This weekend the Maroons will be in Lynchburg to play two games in the Shellenberger Classic. Roanoke will take on Wheaton Friday at 5 pm and Salibury Saturday, also at 5 pm.
Next Wednesday, September 13, Roanoke is at Ferrum.
