Nicole Brown grew up in a household where her parents regularly emphasized the importance of running.
By the time she graduated from high school, Nicole had already participated in dozens of organized running events. Brown, a Roanoke County native, considers the LewisGale Half Marathon one of her favorites. The annual event, now in its third year, will take place next Saturday, October 13.
“What I appreciate most about this event is that it is for runners of all types,” Brown said. “Whether you are the first or last person to cross the line, everyone feels a sense of accomplishment and roots for each other.”
Since its inception in 2016, the purpose of the Lewis Gale Half Marathon has been “to take runners on a tour of Salem through neighborhoods, Roanoke College and the Roanoke River Greenway.” In keeping with tradition, this year’s race will start on Main Street at 8 a.m. Salem Parks & Rec Special Events Supervisor Ashley Durkin expects a good turnout next Saturday. “We are always looking to draw people to Salem to experience everything that the city has to offer,” Durkin said.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if this is our most successful marathon to date.” All participants must adhere to the race rules: the half marathon must be finished in four hours to remain official, race numbers and entries cannot be transferred to another person and all entry fees are non-refundable. Additionally, strollers, baby joggers, skateboards, bicycles or animals on leashes are not allowed.
Until completing her first one last year, Lisa English was of the belief that she didn’t have it in her to finish the LewisGale Half Marathon. “I was fearful that I didn’t have the stamina to keep up,” English said.
“My friends and family were so positive though that I just let all of my worries vanish, and fully commit myself. It was even better than I expected. I encourage everyone to participate at least once.” Every runner will receive a custom medal and race shirt at the finish line. Runners 21 and older will also be able to redeem a free beer Friday night at Packet Pick-Up or Saturday after the race, courtesy of Olde Salem Brewing Company. Many runners, like David Henderson, have traveled from out of town to participate in the LewisGale Half Marathon.
“This will mark my third time, and I can’t wait,” Henderson, a resident of Charlotte, North Carolina, said. “I brought my wife and kids with me this year.” While overall awards are awarded by clock time, age group awards will be awarded by chip time. At approximately 11 a.m., the award ceremony for the half marathon winners will take place on the stage of the Salem Farmers Market. The ceremony for the 8K winners will take place at 9:30 a.m. For registration information and more, visit salemhalfmarathon. com.
