Community members, volunteers and local leaders gathered April 23 to celebrate the re dedication of Mrs. Dorsey’s Clothes Closet during a ribbon cutting hosted by the Salem Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce.
The event marked the organization’s move to a new location at 2121 Apperson Drive and highlighted its decades long mission of providing quality clothing with dignity to those in need.
Attendees heard remarks reflecting on the nonprofit’s history and impact, followed by a prayer before the ceremonial ribbon cutting. Organizers described the gathering as a meaningful moment that brought together supporters from across the region.
Mrs. Dorsey’s Clothes Closet began in 1983 in a church basement with a simple goal: to offer clothing in a way that preserves dignity. Over the years, it has grown to serve thousands of individuals and families throughout the Salem and Roanoke Valley area.
Chamber representatives expressed appreciation for the strong turnout and community support, noting the presence of longtime volunteers and local leaders as a testament to the organization’s lasting influence.
The re-dedication celebrated not only the new space, but also the continued growth of an organization rooted in compassion and service.
“The Re-Dedication and Ribbon Cutting for Mrs. Dorsey’s Clothes Closet marks more than our new facility. It celebrates the strength and commitment of a community coming together to restore dignity, offer hope, and ensure that every neighbor is seen, valued and cared for,” Garry Lautenschlager, administrator for Salem Area Ministries, said.
“For over 40 years, our volunteers have been the heart of the Clothes Closet and make this ministry possible.”
