New River Community College’s local board re-elected the officers in a meeting on Monday. Steven E. Harvey was re-elected board chair and Jim Loux was re-elected vice-chair.

Steve Harvey

Harvey, of Radford, works at TechLab, Inc., a local medical diagnostic products manufacturer.

Loux, of Pulaski County, is president of Allegheny Logistics Group, located at the New River Valley Airport in Dublin.

Three members also retired from the board this year. Barbara Straub, of Blacksburg, has served on the board since 2009 and was formerly vice-chair. She was also a member of the Curriculum and Program Committee and the Personnel Committee.

Jim Loux

James A. Riffe, Jr., of Narrows, has served on the board since 2013. He was also a member of the Budget & Finance Committee.

Karen T. Thompson, of Floyd, has served on the board since 2013 and previously served on the board from 1989 to 1997. She was also a member of the Curriculum and Program Committee and the Budget and Finance Committee.

The college board acts in an advisory capacity to the State Board for Community Colleges with respect to the operation of New River Community College.

Board members serve a four-year term and may continue for two consecutive terms. Each local political subdivision sponsoring the college appoints board members to serve in this capacity.
