CROTTY, Gene
Gene Crotty, 87, of Charlottesville, formerly of Botetourt, died Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at The Colonnades of Charlottesville. He was born June 6, 1929 in Princeton, W.Va. where he served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War after which time he attended the University of Virginia (UVA) earning a Bachelor of Science in Commerce. In 1957 Gene earned an MBA in the first graduating class from the Darden Graduate School of Business at UVA.
Shortly after earning his MBA degree Gene obtained his CPA certification and embarked on a career teaching Accounting and Taxation, serving on the faculties of the University of Virginia, Georgia Tech, University of North Carolina, University of Texas and Texas A&M during his 40 years of teaching.
Gene served on the Board of Associates for the Alderman Library and Darden’s School Alumni Board. He was an active member of the University of Virginia’s Raven Society, the Abbott Society, the Cornerstone Society and the Thomas Jefferson Society.
An avid admirer and historian of Thomas Jefferson and the history of Southwest Virginia, Gene wrote three books on Thomas Jefferson all of which were sponsored and published by the University of Virginia: “Jefferson’s Legacy: His Own University,” copyright 1996, “Thomas Jefferson Trivia; The Many Facets of a Fascinating Man,” copyright 2000, and “Jefferson’s Western Travels Over Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains,” copyright 2002. Gene was honored by the Library of Congress for his first book. Gene also authored, “The Visits of Lewis & Clark to Fincastle, Virgini,” copyright 2003, which was published by the Southwest Virginia Historical Society.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Crotty, who passed away in 2007. He is survived by his two sons, Michael E. Crotty of Chappaqua, N.Y. and David M. Crotty of Troutville;and two grandchildren, Wyatt Matthew Crotty and Emmalyn Grace Crotty. Gene was fortunate to have spent the past few years of his life with his loyal companion, Mary Flippen, a resident of the Colonnades in Charlottesville.

JARBOE, Sarah J.
Sarah Joy Jarboe, 37, of Buchanan, passed away March 28, 2017.
She is survived by her husband, Phillip Jarboe; twin sons, Ryan and Travis Jarboe; parents, William and Julianne Hall; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Robin and David Baker; brothers, Doug Turpin and wife Krin, Nathan Turpin; step-sister, Karie Mitchell and husband Mark; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She is also survived by father and step-mother, Paul and Sandy Turpin; half-sister, Megan; father-in-law, Francis Jarboe. She was preceded in death by a sister, Heather Turpin.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at First Church of the Brethren, 2001 Carroll Ave, NW, Roanoke, with the Rev. Dava Hensley officiating. Interment was Monday, April 3, at 11 a.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be sent to Virginia Autism and Behavior Center, 3243 Electric Road, Building E, Suite 1-B, Roanoke, 24018. Arrangements were by Oakey’s North Chapel.
McCULLOUGH, Joseph L.
Joseph “Joe” Lee McCullough, 67, of Buchanan passed away Sunday, April 2, 2017.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy McCullough; parents, Jack and Julia McCullough; and brother, Phillip McCullough.
He is survived by his daughter, Marlena McCullough; granddaughter, Lacey Lawhorne; brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Debbie McCullough; niece, Dawn Reid; and nephew, Phillip McCullough II.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, in Fairview Cemetery, Buchanan. The family received friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, at the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made at www.botetourtfuneralhome.com.
TUTKA, Julia M.
Julia (Judy) Marie Tutka, 92, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2017.
She is survived by her three daughters, Louise Scott and husband, Richard, of Hardy; Irene Keiley and husband, Lee, of Loganville, Ga.; and Angela Altizer of Loganville, Ga.; and one son, Andrew Tutka Jr. and wife, Debbie, of Richmond. Julia is also survived by five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one sister, Otelia Baugh of Petersburg. She also leaves behind a most special friend and companion, Richard J. Smith of Buchanan. Julia was preceded in death by her parents, Anna and Otto Teibel; her sisters Vlasta Lilliston, Lillian Harsh, and Louise Covington; and one brother, Franklin Teibel.
Julia wore many hats in her lifetime and traveled the world as the wife of an Air Force husband, living in Germany, Washington D.C., Virginia, New York, Morocco, and California, often traveling alone with her children to meet the demands of military life. Prior to that she worked as a nurse and dental assistant in Richmond, and retired from Richmond Memorial Hospital and moved to Buchanan. She was a remarkable and fun loving woman, who will be warmly remembered by her friends and family.
An extra expression of thank you to the nurses and staff of Friendship Health & Rehab who took such great care of her throughout her long stay with them.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 8, at the Friendship Resident Center Chapel, 397 Hershberger Road in Roanoke, at 2 p.m.
