LAYNE, Robert E.

Robert Eugene “Ron” Layne, 61, of Roanoke died Thursday, April 27, 2017 at his home following a brief illness.

Ron was born in Roanoke and grew up in Fincastle.  He lived the last 20 years in Roanoke. Ron was the son of the late Billy Ray and Margaret Elizabeth Nininger Layne.

He was a crane operator with Gerdau Steel and enjoyed his Harley Davidson Sportster.  Ron was a hard worker and enjoyed caring for his home.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Chesnut, and brother, Daniel Kidd.

Ron is survived by his wife of 21 years, Annie Lynne Draper Layne; brothers, William Layne of Roanoke and Marty Layne of Fincastle; sisters, Joan Unroe of Eagle Rock and Stacy Herrell of Fincastle; numerous nieces and nephews. Pall bearers were Robert Draper, Stephen Chesnut, Joshua Layne, Jacob Herrell, Corey Sparks, Mike Unroe,

Ron’s family would like to extend a special thanks to Carilion Hospice for their very good care.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 2 at Rader Funeral Home, Daleville with Pastor Steve Noel officiating. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery (White Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Robert Draper, Stephen Chesnut, Joshua Layne, Jacob Herrell, Corey Sparks and Mike Unroe. On-line condolences may be made to the family at www.rader-funeralhome.com.

 

SMITH, Louis E.

Louis Edward Smith, 83, of Eagle Rock, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2017.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Nelva Smith and grandson, James Louis Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margaret Nicely Smith; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Clay Coleman of Fincastle; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Lisa Smith of Salem; James “Peanut” and Laura Smith of Buchanan; grandchildren, Amy Coleman, Chandler Smith, Garrett and Hannah McMillan; siblings and spouses, Betty Johnson, Cecil and Pearl Smith, Patsy and Butch Neil, Billy Smith, and Roy and Kathy Smith; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and co-workers.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Woody and the Rev. Robert McRae officiating.  Interment will follow in Bethel UMC Cemetery on US 220 North.  Flowers are beautiful, but those wishing to make a contribution, please consider ARH Cancer Center, 109 Cliffview Drive, Covington, 24426.
