Steve Scott Oliver, of Salem, Va., our beloved Coach O, teacher, and friend, entered the gates of Heaven on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at the age of 77.

Born to Walter and Elsie Oliver on July 24, 1947, he grew up in Portsmouth, Va.  He graduated from Cradock High School in 1965.  Afterwhich, he attended Emory & Henry College.  In his third year of college, he was drafted to the United States Army.  A devoted veteran, Steve proudly served during the Vietnam War, embodying the spirit of courage and dedication that characterized his life.  After his service, he returned to Emory & Henry and completed his degree in Bachelor of Arts in 1973.  Steve found his true calling as a teacher at Addison and Patrick Henry High Schools and as a wrestling and football coach, inspiring countless students and young athletes with his passion for education and sports.  In 1983 he moved to Salem High School as a Health and PE teacher and football coach during the legendary Willis White coaching era.  Steve was the defensive line coach for six state championships as a Spartan.  He continued coaching after retirement, volunteering at Andrew Lewis Middle School’s football program.  His commitment to shaping young minds and nurturing talent left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.  Everyone knew his love for dogs.  Barney, Jake, and Hoppi were his faithful companions through adulthood.  He was a faithful servant at Ridgewood Baptist Church, and was loved by all church members.  Steve was a good man with a good heart, known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering support for his family, friends, and community.  He was loved by all who crossed his path, often remembered for his infectious smile and warm spirit.  He is survived by a loving Salem community, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A period of visitation was held on Monday, September 30, 2024, from 4 to 8 p.m., in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel.  A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at 6 p.m., in the Salem High School auditorium.  Steve will be reunited with family in his final resting place of Culpeper, Va.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salem Sports Foundation or Ridgewood Baptist Church.  Online condolences may be expressed at www.johnmoakey.com.

Rest in peace, Steve.  Your legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire us all.
