Heavy rain over the weekend flooded parts of Salem. As a result, several roads in low-lying areas were closed. The city encouraged residents to avoid traveling near the Roanoke River as it crested over the weekend. The city’s fire & EMS personnel, as well as the police department, assisted some residents in moving to higher ground. Later in the weekend, high winds left some residents without power in the Stonegate and Red Lane Extension areas. The city said its electric department workers restored power as quickly as possible.
