The Salem City School Board elected Andy Raines as chair and Macel Janoschka as vice chair during its annual reorganization meeting July 14 at the school division’s central office.
The appointments were approved unanimously and took effect immediately.
Raines was first appointed to the board in 2014 after replacing retiring Chair Sally Southard. A graduate of James Madison University, he serves as chief commercial officer for Restoration Bioproducts. His wife, Amy, is a former teacher at East Salem Elementary School, and their two adult children graduated from Salem High School.
Raines is serving his fifth term on the board and has been chair since January 2025.
Janoschka joined the board in June 2024 after being selected to complete the remainder of former board member Rachel Thompson’s term. She and her husband, Stephen, have two sons who attend Salem City Schools. Stephen Janoschka is a technology and engineering teacher at Salem High School.
A graduate of Virginia Tech and the University of South Carolina, Janoschka studied law and serves in the Salem Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
School officials expressed appreciation for the board members’ commitment to serving the division and supporting quality educational opportunities for teachers, staff and students.
