After 20 years serving the citizens of Salem, Randy Foley has announced he will not run for re-election in November.
Foley made his announcement at the close of the May 26 Council meeting. His term will end the last day of December.
“It has been my absolute honor and privilege to serve this city,” he said, reading from a prepared statement. “This experience would not have been possible without the unwavering support of my family, my friends, our dedicated city staff, and most importantly, the voters.” he said.
In his 20 years Foley never lost an election. He was elected to Council in May 2006 and was elected mayor by his peers from July 1, 2008, to June 30, 2020.
“I am incredibly proud of everything we have accomplished together to make our city a better place,” Foley said. “I want to thank everyone for the partnerships, the memories and the successful journey.”
He continued, “During my 20 years as a member of City Council, the need for regional cooperation has expanded greatly. When we combine our strengths and unique features good things happen valley wide.”
Foley was part of the council team that approved funding for Salem Schools to build the city’s first new school from the ground up, South Salem Elementary.
The 1987 Salem High School graduate who played football attended the University of Virginia on a football scholarship. Foley earned a bachelor’s degree in government and master’s in public administration followed by another master’s in business administration from the Citadel.
Foley and his wife, Nicole, have three grown children and six grandchildren.
