The Roanoke College field hockey team played host to Washington and Lee on Friday afternoon at Kerr Stadium in Salem and dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to visiting Washington & Lee.

The matchup of a pair of 3-1 teams under the lights would start just a bit late as Roanoke took a moment to honor their four seniors, Emilee Wooten, Lauren Heffron, Kaylee Collison, and Mallory Wainwright.  After the ceremony, the Generals scored the first two goals of the night just 30 seconds apart to seize control to take a lead they would not relinquish.

However, Roanoke wouldn’t go down without a fight. Down 4-0 the Maroons mounted a furious rally that would see three scores in the final 15 minutes, including one on a last second penalty corner. However, the rally would fall just short.

Wooten, Caroline Diehl and Lauren Heffron scored the RC goals. Hannah Roerden went the distance in goal and recorded seven saves.

The Maroons were scheduled to host Ferrum on Tuesday in the final home game of the abbreviated season.
