The Glenvar cross country team had a good turnout and was working hard toward Wednesday’s season opening meet at Giles. Amanda Wade is coaching the team with help from Dickie Myers, and the Highlanders can often be seen running the trails at Green Hill Park.

Senior Dustin Wade was Glenvar’s number one boy at the beginning of last year’s cross country season but was injured midway through the season. After returning from his injury, he ended up placing second in both the 800m and 4x4m relay in the State Track Meet this past spring. He is currently the number one boy on the team this season.

Peyton Fletcher is another returning senior who is currently number two. Kilian McCroskey, also a senior, is the two-time defending state champ in the track 400m, along with placing second in the 4×400 meter relay at the State Track Meet. He’s also returning to cross country this season.

For the girls, Rachel Millirons placed 10th in last year’s Cross Country State Meet and also placed 4th in the two-mile and 6th in the mile at that State Track Meet this past spring. She is a junior and is currently the number one girl on Glenvar’s team.

Senior Kailee Sesler is also returning from last year, along with Dominga Oretga, Paige Bowers, Ashley Zaronsky, and Alyssa Meadows, all of whom were part of the girl’s varsity team who made it to the State Meet last fall. Last year was the first time in seven years that Glenvar’s girls’ team had made it to the State Cross Country Meet.

“The competition amongst our boys and girls teams is at a high level this season,” said coach Wade. “We have a handful of new runners with a lot of potential. I believe with the determination I have seen among the team, we are in the makings of having a strong season.”

Glenvar’s next meet is September 9 at Green Hill Park when they run in the Knights’ Crossing, hosted by Cave Spring.
