After dropping their first two games the Roanoke College field hockey team picked up a win last Sunday with a 1-0 shutout win over Wittenberg in Springfield, Ohio.
Defense was the name of the game with both teams playing through a scoreless opening 15 minutes. The second quarter was looking to be a no goal period as well before Martha Hurley took a pass from Grace Vernarelli to put the Maroons up 1-0 with 1:41 left in the half. Despite an offensive barrage and sturdy defensive play by Roanoke, neither team was able to find the back of the cage as the Maroons held on for the 1-0 shutout win.
The Maroons, now 1-2, are off until Saturday, September 17, when they host Hood College at 1 pm at Kerr Stadium in Salem.
