Site changed for race discussion

An open forum on racial issues being sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia will take place on Wednesday night, Oct. 25, at the Northwest Community Center. The meeting place has been changed from one previously announced. The forum, “Pursuing the Beloved Community: A Continuing Conversation on Race,” will be from 6-7:30 p.m. It is free and will be led by Dr. Warnie Reed, of the Virginia Tech faculty.

Music on concerts scheduled

Five special musical events, mainly on Fridays at 6 p.m., are scheduled in the coming months as part of Music on the Corner at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Elm Avenue at S.Jefferson St. in downtown Roanoke. They will open on Friday, Oct. 6, with a presentation by the Roanoke Children’s Theatre featuring several local musicians. A reception precedes this program at 5:15 p.m.

It will be followed on Friday, Nov. 3, by a performance of the Mozart “Mass in C Minor”. In this performance, the choir of nearby Second Presbyterian Church will join the Episcopal singers. The next free concert takes place on March 2 when artists from the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra will perform as The Cardinal Ensemble. The final seasonal event is April 20 with Nathan Davy, a Dallas, Texas, organist playing a group of organ selections.

In addition, on Nov.  12, a Sunday at 3 p.m. The Raleigh Ringers, a handbell choir, will play at The Jefferson Center. Tickets of $25 for this event only are available through jeffcenter.org.
