Salem voters went to the polls Tuesday to cast ballots in Virginia’s Republican primary for the United States Senate.
The City of Salem consolidated all Election Day voting at the Salem Civic Center, where polls were open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters also had the opportunity to cast ballots during the state’s early voting period or by absentee ballot if they met applicable deadlines.
Three candidates appeared on the Republican primary ballot for the U.S. Senate nomination: Bert Mizusawa, Kim Farington and David E. Williams. Voters were instructed to select one candidate.

The Republican nominee will advance to the Nov. 3 general election.
Virginia election officials accepted mailed absentee ballots postmarked by Aug. 4 if they were received by the City of Salem General Registrar’s Office by noon Aug. 7, in accordance with state election law. As a result, final certified vote totals may differ from the unofficial Election Day results. Provisional ballots, including those cast through same-day registration, also will be reviewed before certification.
The City of Salem General Registrar’s Office is expected to certify local election results after all eligible absentee and provisional ballots have been processed.
