The Roanoke College field hockey team remained undefeated with a 1-0 win over Bridgewater Tuesday at Salem’s Kerr Stadium. The Maroons are now 6-0 to open the season.
A back and forth first-half saw Bridgewater have an early chance to score, but Jacqueline DiFulvio’s shot was cleared off the goal line by RC defender Stacy Staley. The game remained scoreless until there were 40 seconds left on the clock. Leonore Keunen pushed a pass to Lauren Heffron at the top of the circle. Heffron was then able to chip a shot over the head of BC keeper Ali Bishop to give RC a 1-0 lead.
The victory followed a 2-1 win over St. Mary’s in St. Mary’s City, MD Saturday, as the Maroons won on penalty strokes. The Maroons trailed 1-0 50 minutes into the contest before Heffron evened the game up at 1-1 with an unassisted goal. Both teams played the final 18 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods without a goal being scored.
In the penalty stroke round, Kaylin Stenson was the only one of eight shooters from both teams who was able to convert, giving RC the win. Roanoke held a 15-14 edge in shots for the game. Emma Clark made five saves on the day, including two in the second half and three in overtime.
The Maroons will host Transylvania at noon on Saturday, then host Centre College at Kerr Stadium Sunday at 11 am.
