Roanoke Valley Crop Hunger Walk raises funds for hunger relief

On Sunday, Oct. 20, the 2024 Roanoke Valley Crop Hunger Walk took place at South Roanoke United Methodist Church, bringing together the community in a collective effort to fight hunger. The event, part of the national CROP Hunger Walk initiative, raised funds to support hunger relief globally, with 25% of the proceeds benefiting the Community Solutions Center, part of Feeding Southwest Virginia.

Feeding Southwest Virginia, a partner of Feeding America, has been working for over 40 years to address food insecurity in the region. The organization distributes approximately $28 million worth of food and grocery products annually through more than 400 food pantries and meal programs across a 26-county, nine-city service area.

The walk, which began at 2 p.m. following a press conference, featured local leaders such as Rev. Janet Chisom, Lisa Claytor, John Langan, and Randy Holden, who spoke to the attendees about the importance of fighting hunger. Despite rain, participants gathered for activities and a send-off message, with indoor accommodations made at the church.

The CROP Hunger Walk has long been a vital event in the Roanoke Valley, uniting people of all ages, faiths, and backgrounds with the goal of ending hunger one step at a time. For more information on how to support hunger relief in the region, visit feedingswva.org.
