Roanoke wins first swim meet as Aquatic team returns

The Roanoke swimming team had their first meet since reviving the program Saturday and both the men’s and women’s teams took wins at the Salem YMCA.

The RC men’s swim team earned a 103-74 victory over William Peace, while the women’s team earned a 158-6 win over WPU. It was the first swim meet for Roanoke College in over 30 years.

Nick McGrath picked up the first individual win of the day for the Maroons as he touched the wall first in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 22.23. McGrath then followed that up later in the day by taking the 100 yard free in a time of 49.78.

Logan Cale picked up a big win for RC later in the meet when his 1:03.21 in the 100 yard backstroke was good for first-place and earned valuable points for the Maroons. Roanoke capped the day by taking the top two spots in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The team of McGrath, Ethan Gordon, Jorge Jara Lopez and Tanner Debord won in a time of 1:34.35. Jacob David, Patrick Cox, Cale and Jake Chandler followed behind with a time of 1:51.43 for a second-place finish.

On the women’s side, their 200 yard relay team opened the meet with a win. Reilly Bird, Sarah Virginia Scott, Tessa Kenney and Hannah Sells recorded a time of 1:58.03.

Sells picked up the first individual win of the day, recording a time of 5:55.28 to take the top spot in the 500 yard free.

Bird won the 50 yard free with a time of 25.84, while Maggie Riggan’s time of 2:27.87 was tops in the 200 yard IM. Bird also won in the 100 yard butterfly before Sells touched the wall first in the 100 yard free style in a time of 1:01.81. Scott won the 100 IM with a time of 1:10.43 before taking the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:16.14.

The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Bird, Kenney, Francisca Cifuentes and Sells closed the day with a victory with a time of 1:48.86.

Roanoke will take part in the ODAC Relays at Washington and Lee this Saturday.
