
The Roanoke College women split two basketball games in last weekend’s Jean Beamer Tip-Off Classic at the Cregger Center in Salem. Roanoke defeated Eastern in Saturday’s opener but lost to Centre Sunday afternoon.
The Maroons defeated Eastern, 85-52. Roanoke led by one point after the first period and came out swinging in the second quarter, outscoring the Eagles 15-3 in the first six minutes. RC went into the half with a 43-24 lead.
The Maroons got everyone involved in the second half and outscored Eastern 21-14 in both the third and fourth quarters to secure their second win of the season. Ashley Fowler led the way with 18 points after going six-for-11 from the field and four-for-eight from beyond the arc. Freshman Moriah Tate hit double figures, tallying 13 points on the night. She went four-for-seven from the field and was a perfect three-for-three from the charity stripe. Mariah Cain had a dozen points and Paige Breuer finished with 11. Fowler and Alicea Farmer topped the team in rebounds with eight each.
On Sunday the RC women went down to defeat for the first time, falling 67-59 to Centre College. Roanoke led 24-23 at the half and it was a back and forth third quarter with four lead changes as the teams moved into the final quarter all tied up at 44-44. In the fourth period Centre eventually found an edge that they did not relinquish the rest of the game.
Fowler led the Maroons in scoring again, registering 14 points after shooting .500 from the field. Breuer and Laila Staples weren’t far behind Fowler with 11 points each while Staples grabbed eight rebounds. Breuer and Fowler were both selected to the All-Tournament team.
Now 2-1, the Maroons will be back home this Saturday at 4 pm to host North Carolina Wesleyan.
