The Salem and Glenvar golfers will go head-to-head today when they tee it up at the Hanging Rock Golf Course at 2 pm. Staunton River will also play in the three team match.
Salem is coming off a solid round of 300 on Monday in a River Ridge District match hosted by Pulaski County at the Thorn Springs course. That’s a very good score but it was still 23 strokes behind leader Blacksburg, who shot 11 under par as a team with a score of 277. Jake Albert of the Bruins was medalist with 65.
“They’re the real deal,” said Salem coach Thad Snyder of the Bruins.
Salem’s low score was a 68 by sophomore Kathryn Ha. Macy Johnson was next with a 74 while Trace Monroe and Taylor Davis tied for the other two counting scores with 79 each.
Salem has been consistently behind Blacksburg this season despite shooting some low scores. Patrick Henry was third at Thorn Springs with 313 and Cave Spring was close behind with a solid 316.
On Monday at Hanging Rock the Glenvar golfers hosted a Three Rivers District match and finished fourth among the six district teams competing. Floyd County won the round, as the Buffaloes have done in every district match this season.
Floyd shot a 313 with medalist Ryne Bond leading the way with a 71. Radford was second at 339 and James River shot 350. Next was Glenvar at 357, and Carroll County and Alleghany tied for fourth at 378.
Glenvar’s low score was a tie between Jacson Shepherd and Mason Hylton, who both carded 85. Jay Roberts was next at 92 and Glenvar’s fourth counting score was a 95 by Connor Magruder.
“We shot our low team total on 18 holes,” said coach Shawn Duff. “We still have a ways to go but we’re getting better each match. We were missing two who usually play in our top four as well. It was so exciting that we had some guys step up and contribute.”
After today’s match the Highlanders will return to the links a week from today at the Botetourt Golf & Swim Club. Salem is back in action next Tuesday at the Hidden Valley Country Club, followed by a trip to Floyd on Thursday, September 8.
