The Salem High baseball and softball teams were scheduled to open play in Region 4D tournaments on Wednesday. The boys were at home against E.C. Glass and the girls were at Blacksburg.

Other first round baseball games found William Byrd at top-seeded Liberty Christian Academy, Pulaski County at third seeded Jefferson Forest and Amherst County at fourth seeded Carroll County. If Salem won Wednesday the Spartans would host the winner of the Pulaski-Jefferson Forest game next Tuesday. The championship is on May 31 and both finalists advance to the state tournament.

The Salem softball team is the number seven seed in the eight-team tournament. Other first round games found top seeded William Byrd hosting LCA, third seeded Carroll County home to Bassett and fourth seeded Jefferson Forest hosting Amherst.

If the Spartans won Wednesday they advance to the Region 4D semifinal on Tuesday against the winner of the Carroll-Bassett game. The championship is Thursday, May 31, and both finalists advance to the state Class 4A tournament.

The Salem boys lost their Region 4D tennis opener to E.C. Glass Monday, 5-0. The girls did not qualify for the region.

The Region 4D track meet will be held at William Byrd today after getting rained out last Saturday.
