Salem High lacrosse coach George Revercomb was back on his old high school field last week when the Spartans took on North Cross and came away with a win. Revercomb played high school ball for the Raiders but he was happy to beat his old school, 11-9, as the Spartans improved to 2-1.
This was a special game for Revercomb as George and North Cross coach Chris Pollock talked before the game and decided to make this an annual affair. From this season on the Salem-North Cross game will be played for the “Tommy Girani Cup,” which has a special meaning for Revercomb.
“Tommy was one of my best friends who passed away October 30th of 2024 at 31 years old,” said Revercomb. “He coached at both North Cross with me and Chris Pollock and also coached at Salem with me in 2022 during my first season. He also played Salem Youth Lacrosse as a kid. He played for Liberty’s lacrosse team in college.
“We’re wearing ‘TG’ stickers on the back of our helmets this year to honor his legacy. He means a lot to both the North Cross and Salem programs, so we wanted to add something to the game for him. He was a great coach who loved helping the boys, and an even better person. I was really happy we could bring home the Tommy Girani Cup this season.”
Parker Dallas, Jackson Jones and Holden Custer all had two goals in last week’s win at North Cross. Wade Marble had two goals, Jackson Wininger had three assists and Richard Hof had 12 saves for the Spartans. Ronnie Frith had a strong game on defense.
“Our offense was slow to get going, but we got hot in the fourth quarter,” said Revercomb. “I thought we did a good job hustling on ground balls and earning extra possessions.”
The Spartans were scheduled to play at Western Albemarle on Wednesday but results were too late for publication. They play at Patrick Henry on Friday.
