Salem City School Board selects leadership, sets 2024-25 calendar

The Salem City School Board convened on July 9 to reorganize for the upcoming 2024-25 school year, resulting in new appointments and the establishment of key positions and committees.

Board leadership:

  • Nancy Bradley was elected as the board chair for the 2024-25 school year. The motion was proposed by Teresa Sizemore-Hernandez and seconded by Macel Janoschka. The final resolution was unanimously carried with votes from Bradley, Andy Raines, Sizemore-Hernandez, Stacey Danstrom and Janoschka.
  • Andy Raines was elected as vice-chairman. The motion was also initiated by Sizemore-Hernandez and seconded by Danstrom, with unanimous support from the board members.

Committee and delegate appointments: The board voted on several key appointments, ensuring representation and leadership across various committees and associations:

  • Nancy Bradley was designated as the voting delegate to the Virginia School Boards Association and appointed as the representative to the Roanoke Valley Governor’s School Board.
  • Andy Raines was named the alternate voting delegate to the Virginia School Boards Association and, alongside Stacey Danstrom, appointed to the School Health Advisory Board.
  • Teresa Sizemore-Hernandez and Macel Janoschka were appointed as representatives to the Special Education Advisory Committee.
  • Board members Bradley, Raines, Sizemore-Hernandez, Janoschka and Danstrom, along with Superintendent Dr. Curtis Hicks, Director of Administrative Services Dr. Forest Jones and Chief Finance Officer Mandy C. Hall, were appointed to serve on the Facilities Committee for the 2024-25 school year.

The motion for these appointments was made by Bradley, seconded by Raines, and carried unanimously.

Clerk appointments:

  • Susan E. Young was appointed as clerk of the board, with Kirstine M. Barber named as deputy clerk. The motion was proposed by Danstrom, seconded by Sizemore-Hernandez and approved unanimously.

Meeting schedule for 2024-25: The board also established its schedule of regular meetings for the upcoming school year, as follows:

  • Aug. 13 at 7 p.m.
  • Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
  • Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
  • Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.
  • Dec. 10 at 7 p.m.
  • Jan. 14, 2025 at 7 p.m.
  • Jan. 24, 2025, TBD (work session)
  • Feb. 11, 2025 at 7 p.m.
  • March 11, 2025 at 7 p.m.
  • March 20, 2025 at 7 p.m. (special meeting)
  • April 8, 2025 at 7 p.m.
  • May 13, 2025 at 7 p.m.
  • June 10, 2025 at 7 p.m.
  • July 8, 2025 at 7 p.m.
