The first football and volleyball scrimmages of the preseason will be held this week as the high school fall sports season.
Both local football teams have scrimmages scheduled for this week. Salem will scrimmage Brookville tonight, Thursday, at Salem Stadium beginning at 6 pm. Glenvar has a home scrimmage on Friday morning at Highlander Stadium against Graham at 10 am.
Salem will have a benefit game on Friday, August 18, against Magna Vista while Glenvar is at Blacksburg that evening. Salem will open the football season at Amherst on August 25 and Glenvar is home to Galax that night. Look for a special football preview section in the Salem Times-Register issue of August 24.
The Salem and Glenvar volleyball teams will scrimmage each other tonight at Glenvar. The junior varsity teams will meet at 5:30 pm at GHS with the varsity to follow at approximately 7 pm. Salem will scrimmage at Franklin County next Wednesday, August 17, and Glenvar is at Parry McCluer on Thursday, August 17. Both teams open on August 22 with Liberty Christian Academy at Salem and Glenvar at Covington.
Andrew Lewis Middle School will have a football jamboree today at Salem Stadium, beginning at 10 am. Lewis, William Byrd, William Fleming and Patrick Henry will participate with two half-field scrimmages at a time. Lewis will go against PH at 10 am, Fleming at 10:30 am and Byrd at 11 am. The Wolverines open August 18 at 4 pm against William Byrd prior to the high school varsity benefit game.
The Lewis volleyball team will scrimmage at Blacksburg today. Lewis is in the Cave Spring Jamboree on Saturday, August 19, beginning at 9 am.
