The Salem High girls saw their soccer season come to an end with a “one to nil” loss to Jefferson Forest in the South Sub-Region 4D semifinal Monday. The host Cavaliers remained undefeated at 16-0-1 but had all they could handle with the scrappy Spartans in Forest.
It was a tough defensive battle throughout the entire game, but Jefferson Forest was able to break through in the final minutes,” said Salem coach Justin Applegate.
With the loss Salem finished the season at 12-7. They opened the sub-region with a 10-1 win over the Phoenix in Mecklenburg County last week. Laikyn Funk and Brooklyn Atkins had three goals each, Avery Mangus had two and Aly Price and Ashlyn Adkins had one each.
Salem will graduate six girls from the varsity but the future is bright with some outstanding talent due to return next spring. Also, the All-River Ridge District team was announced and Funk and Avery Mangus made the first team. Aly Price, Blair Bowers and keeper Karis Guy was 2nd team.
“This year was a big improvement for us from the last,” said Applegate. “I’m excited to take another step forward next year.”
