The Salem High golfers went under 300 on Monday at the Blacksburg Country Club, but that was only good enough for second place. Host Blacksburg shot a 290 to Salem’s 295 to win the River Ridge District match.
Actually three teams went under 300 as Hidden Valley came in with a four-player total of 299. Those three teams have been swapping honors in the first month of the season.
“The three of us have been pretty close every match,” said Salem coach Thad Snyder. “But it really doesn’t matter except for what we do at the end of the season. We want to just keep getting better.”
Salem’s Katherine Ha and Blacksburg’s David Zhang tied for medalist honors with rounds of 67, which is five under par at the BCC. Also scoring for Salem were Taylor Davis at 75, Trey Joyce at 76 and Alex Rea at 77. Hunter King shot 78.
The Spartans are back in action today with a non-district match at Draper Valley against Christiansburg, Carroll County and host Pulaski County. Salem’s next district match is September 8 at Auburn Hills.
