Handmade German Jewelry Box

During the 1800s as waves of immigrants arrived in the United States, many people from Germany and Ireland came to the Roanoke Valley.

One remnant of this at the Salem Museum is this jewelry box.  It was handmade in Germany by a father for his daughter around 1898.  He made it for her before she embarked for America to start a new life with her husband.  It was beautifully crafted and passed down the family for generations before being donated to the Museum.

Students ages 8-14 can see this handmade German jewelry box, and more, this weekend at the Salem Museum during the Summer Fun program.

This week Summer Fun will explore “Immigration to the Roanoke Valley.”  Students will learn about the people who settled in the Roanoke Valley in the 1800s.  They will discover where they came from and what their lives were like.

All programs are FREE!!

Each hour-long program will be held on Saturdays at 11:00am and again at 2:00pm.  The content will be the same at both times each day.  Call 540-389-6760 or email garrett@salemmuseum.org to register.  RSVP Required.
