Salem Police are investigating a family dispute that escalated into a shooting late in the afternoon of April 14, leaving one man dead and another injured.

Officers responded to an emergency call reporting “shots fired” in the southern quadrant of the city at approximately 4:48 p.m. Police arrived at a residence in the 600 block of Pyrtle Drive, where they located a man suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

During the investigation, officers also found a second man inside a parked vehicle at the residence with a more serious gunshot wound. Both individuals were transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment. The man found inside the vehicle later died from his injuries.

Authorities said the incident stemmed from a family dispute. No other family members or neighbors were involved or injured.

Police believe the shooting was an isolated incident and said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The investigation remains ongoing, though Salem Police do not anticipate any charges or arrests.
