Cousins display their queen-sized quilt.

About five years ago, a group of cousins started getting together each month to sew and spend time together. They gather at one of the cousin’s homes, bringing their sewing machines and materials to make projects to help people and charities in the surrounding communities.

Over the years they’ve donated over 2,000 turbans to the Blue Ridge Cancer Centers for cancer patients. They’ve donated quilts for the fundraisers: three for Cancer Kids and Christmas in Pearisburg, one for a lady in Floyd who needed a liver transplant, another for a breast cancer in Floyd, one for a teenager in Salem with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, two for a memorial scholarship in Floyd, and last year, a quilt for the Salem Relay for Life.

The cousins have just completed a beautiful queen-size purple brick quilt to be raffled for this year’s Relay for Life event in Salem. Raffle tickets are $5.00 each and all proceeds go to the Salem Relay for Life. The drawing will be held at 6:00 p.m. at the Relay for Life event at Longwood Park on May 13, 2017. Tickets will be available at the Relay for Life activities or contacting Harold Weikle (hweikle51@gmail.com) or Kenny Reynolds (kreynolds@vrwa.org) .

The cousins include: Geneva McPeak and Nora Bentley of Floyd, Paulette Gardner of Riner, Mary Hodge of Galax, Ruth Derflinger and Teresa Paisley of Radford and Barbara Reynolds of
Salem.
