The Salem VA Health Care System has received third-quarter fiscal year 2026 funding through the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Non-Recurring Maintenance program to continue infrastructure improvements across its campus.
The funding is part of a record $4.8 billion nationwide investment in fiscal year 2026 to modernize, repair and improve VA health care facilities through the Veterans Health Administration’s Non-Recurring Maintenance program.
Projects funded at the Salem VA Health Care System include infrastructure upgrades to support the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Electronic Health Record Modernization program, renovation of Building 19 for student housing, modernization of the cardiac catheterization laboratory, renovation of the main lobby, repairs to the administration building, repairs to underground fuel storage tanks, and the second phase of heating, ventilation and air conditioning system upgrades.
According to the VA, the electronic health record infrastructure improvements are designed to support the department’s modernization efforts and enhance care delivery for veterans. The student housing renovation is intended to support the education and recruitment of future health care professionals, while the cardiac catheterization laboratory renovation will modernize facilities for cardiovascular care.
The main lobby project will improve accessibility and efficiency for veterans, caregivers, visitors and staff. Repairs to the administration building and underground fuel storage tanks are intended to improve safety, reliability and emergency preparedness. HVAC upgrades will improve indoor air quality, energy efficiency and comfort throughout the facility.
“This funding allows the Salem VA Health Care System to continue modernizing and improving, so our facilities remain safe, efficient, and equipped to provide high-quality care for our Veterans across Southwest Virginia,” Health Care System Executive Director Tammy Snyder said.
The VA said it has obligated $2.2 billion of the $4.8 billion committed for fiscal year 2026. Third-quarter funding includes $915 million for repairing and upgrading aging infrastructure systems at medical facilities, $229 million for facility improvements supporting future electronic health record updates and $11 million for major building upgrades such as elevators, electrical systems and boiler plants.
The announcement said the funding is part of broader efforts to improve VA facilities and services nationwide.
