Salem’s Kai Bowen goes high for a spike in last week’s win over Jefferson Forest.

The Salem High girls have a busy week on the volleyball court after a great start to the season. The Spartans won their first four matches and this week they’ll be playing three matches in three days.
Salem returned from a long Labor Day weekend with a match at Patrick Henry on Tuesday, falling in 4 sets 25-23, 25-9, 23-25 and 25-12. On Wednesday they played host to Franklin County, but results were too late for publication, and tonight they’re off to Christiansburg for a River Ridge District match.
The Spartans won two matches on back-to-back nights last week. They had their home opener against Jefferson Forest and won in four sets, 26-24, 22-25, 25-20 and 25-21. Kai Bowen and Ella Walker had eight kills each while Makenzie Board had 20 assists and three aces and Reese Redford had 12 digs and five kills. The Salem jayvee also won in straight sets.
A night later, on Thursday, Salem played host to Faith Christian and improved to 4-0 with a three-set win. The Spartans won 25-17, 25-15 and 25-13.
Walker had nine kills to lead Salem while Board had 19 assists. Autumn Bailey had six kills and Redford had seven digs and three aces for the Spartans.
