Salem wrestlers are second in the region, qualify 8 for state

The wrestling post-season is here, and the Salem and Glenvar teams are looking to make some noise. The Spartans were runners-up in the Region 4D tournament while Glenvar is scheduled wrestle in the Region 2C tournament this Saturday at Liberty High School in Bedford.

Salem was the Region 4D runnerup and qualified eight wrestlers for the Class 4 tournament in Virginia Beach the weekend of February 21. James Wood was the Region 4D champ, outscoring Salem by 21 points with 231. Salem had 210 points and Sherando was third with 190.5.

“We had every wrestler compete and score points,” said Salem coach Lawrence Van Liew. “It was a huge team effort.”

Salem put three wrestlers on the top step of the podium. Derek Bush took first place at 120, Anthony Baudanza won the 132 pound title and heavyweight Jake James was also first. Sayge Herndon made the final at 106 and finished second.

Three Spartans won consolation finals to finish third and qualify for the state, Patrick Patterson at 113, Kolynn Eastman at 126 and Giuseppe Baudanza at 138. Jake Preston advanced with a fourth place at 215 and also scoring points for Salem but not advancing to the state were Dylan Bonet, Tre Kunz, Tolin Saul, Rocket Cowling and Keegan Price.
