United Steelworkers Local 1023 announced last week that a new contract for workers at Yokohama Tire Manufacturing Virginia, LLC in Salem had been ratified. The company announced Sept. 20 that an agreement in principle on a new four-year contract with the union had been reached. “Negotiations once again went well as both sides were professional and worked diligently throughout the process,” Tetsuro “Tex” Murakami, president of Salem-based YTMV, said in an announcement in September. Local 1023 represents approximately 500 employees at the Salem plant. The new agreement will replace the last contract, which was signed in 2018. The new contract will expire Sept. 16, 2026. According to the tentative agreement, the vote was held Sept. 29 from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center.
