Salem’s Lewis is state Class 4 champ in the 100 meter run

The Salem boys took seventh and the girls came in at 33rd among 38 teams represented at the Virginia High school League state Class 4 championship track meet last weekend. The Pulaski County boys and Heritage of Newport News girls won team titles at Liberty University in Lynchburg.
Sophomore Peyton Lewis had a big day for the Spartans, winning three medals. Peyton won the 100 meters with a time of 10.62 and took second in the 200 in 21.88, just .12 behind Antoinne Fair of Deep Creek High School.

In the 4×100 relay Salem’s Region 4D championship team of anchor leg Lewis, Josiah Persinger, DaRon Wilson and Jonathan Vernon was edged out by Pulaski County for first. The Cougar foursome ran 41.84 while Salem was six one-hundreths of a second behind at 41.90, bettering their mark of 42.75 that won the region.
Also scoring for Salem were Persinger with an eighth in the 100 and Braydon Taylor with an eighth in the 300 hurdles.
All the girls’ points came from the 4×100 relay team of My’la Green, Shaniya Robinson, Neelah Logan and Charli Wynn. They ran a time of 50.57. Robinson was 10th in the 100 meters and Green was 12th in the long jump but only the top eight places scored in the state meet.
