Salem’s Wood wins the long jump at Blue Demon Invitational meet

Salem’s Zavione Wood long jumps in the “Blue Demon Invitational” at Christiansburg High School Saturday. Savione won the event.

The Salem High track team had a busy week with a home quad meet last Wednesday and a trip to Christiansburg for the Blue Demon Invitational on Saturday.

First place winners at Salem High for the girls included Janae Blakeney in the 100 and 200, Kalei Memmer in the discus and the 4×800 relay team of Sarah Ahlers, Carolina Bowen, Emma Chamberland and Katelyn Crumpacker. For the boys, Jeremiah Wilson won the 200, Zavione Wood won the long jump, Johnny Danstrom took the 400 and Salem’s 4×100 and 4×800 relay teams both finished first.

On Saturday in Christiansburg highlights for the girls included a third in the pole vault for McKenzie Moran, a fourth in the high jump for Tiffany McLaughlin, a fourth in the discus for Alexandra McCadden, a sixth in the 3,200 for Crumpacker and a third place finish for the 4×800 relay.

For the boys, Wood won the long jump with a state qualifying leap of 21’ 4.5”. Amarri Edwards was second in the 400, Danstrom was third in the 400 and sixth in the 800, Zach Hoyer was fifth in the 3,200 and Carlos Alleyne took a fifth in the 110 high hurdles. In the relays Salem’s 4×800 team was fourth, the 4×400 team was sixth and the 4×100 team took seventh.

Also, Wilson participated in the Bullis Bulldog Invitational last Saturday in Potomac, MD and took fourth in the 110 high hurdles among a very talented field. Jeremiah had a personal best with a state qualifying time of 14.75 seconds.
