On August 4, 2024, Joseph Wayne Sample of Fincastle, Va. met his Creator.  Joe, the eldest son of Granville Wayne and Dorothy Taliferro Sample, was born on February 22, 1937.  He attended Andrew Lewis High School, Milligan College, and served in the United States Army.

In addition to his parents, parents in-law and many beloved family members, Joe was preceded in death by his elder son Kevin J. Sample, eldest grandson Zachary R. Sample, brother-in-law B. Edwin Garst, brother-in-law James L. Evans, sister Pamela S. Melton and brother-in-law Allen W. Melton.

Joe is survived by his wife, Norma Faye Garst Sample; son Scott M. Sample (Laurie); daughter Sydni Sample Murphy (Darren); daughter-in-law Teresa P. Sample; grandsons Connor W. Sample, Benton W. Sample and Cullen M. Sample; sisters Ellen S. Evans and Judy S. Eynon (Lynn); and brother Thomas G. Sample.

Joe was a faithful, devoted husband for 63 years.  He was a loving father who brought his children up in The Lord; teaching them love, honor, and respect.  Joe was expressive of and thankful for God’s beauty surrounding us.  Joe was a long-time member of the Salem Church of Christ where he taught Sunday School and then the Botetourt Church of Christ where he served as elder and Sunday School teacher instructing his students to “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Salem Church of Christ.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date.

Online condolences may be expressed to the Sample family by visiting www.johnmoakey.com.
