The Salem and Glenvar football teams will play host to benefit games this Friday in their final tuneup before the start of the regular season. Both teams are home for 7 pm starts, with Salem hosting Brookville and Glenvar entertaining Blacksburg. The Spartans played host to Albemarle in a controlled scrimmage last Friday at Salem Stadium. Coach Don Holter saw some things to work on but, overall, was pleased. “I thought we played with great effort,” he said. “We were flying around and showed good physicality.

On offense, I liked our cohesiveness. We made a lot of changes in the offensive line but they’re coming along faster than I expected. That’s important, because they’re the foundation of our offense.” Glenvar scrimmaged at William Byrd last Friday. “It was exactly what I expected,” said coach Kevin Clifford. “Our offense was very vanilla. We wanted to evaluate some kids and look at some kids at front, and we were able to do that.”

The middle school programs for both schools will open today. Andrew Lewis will host Patrick Henry at 5 pm at Salem Stadium while Glenvar will open at Hidden Valley Middle School. Also, recreation football games will begin on Saturday, August 26. Locations and opponents have yet to be announced. Look for previews of the Salem and Glenvar High teams in TOUCHDOWN XLVII, a special section in next week’s Salem Times-Register.
