The Salem High volleyball team is on a roll again. After their 10 game winning streak to open the season was interrupted the Spartans have won their last two matches over Patrick Henry and Pulaski County, both on the road.

Salem’s hopes for an undefeated season ended with losses to two strong River Ridge District teams, Hidden Valley and Christiansburg. Last Thursday in Roanoke they took on another good team, Patrick Henry, and won a nail-biter in five sets. After losing the first set, 25-15, the Salemites roared back to win the next two, 25-22 and 26-24. They lost the fourth set, 25-22, as PH tied the match but Salem pulled out a thrilling fifth set, 15-13, to pick up the win.

Salem was led by Kourtney Goens, who had 16 kills. Parker Price and Bailey Redford had six kills each and Gabby Crawley had five blocks.

“It was a hard game all the way till the end,” said Salem coach Doug Eller.

The Spartans made it two in a row Tuesday with a win in Pulaski as the Spartans rallied from two sets down to win 21-25, 21-25, 25-13, 25-19 and 15-13 again in the fifth set. Crawley had nine kills and nine blocks, Emme Custer had seven kills and nine blocks and Macy Gibson had six kills.

With that win Salem is now 12-2 overall and 4-2 in the district.

The Spartans are off tonight, returning Tuesday, October 7, to host Cave Spring.
