The Salem softball team is 5-4 after
dropping a 10-0 game at Christiansburg
Tuesday. Cora Robinson had a double
and reached on an error in a tough
night for the Spartans, who had won
their past two games.
The Spartans put some big numbers
on the board in winning two games
on back-to-back nights last week.
Salem hit double figures in games with
William Fleming and Hidden Valley.
Last Thursday in Roanoke the
Spartans took a 22-0 win over Fleming
as Cora Grace Sparger struck out a
dozen batters in four innings. Sparger
also drove in six runs, highlighted by
a grand slam home run. Caitlin Wells
and Piper Furmage had four hits each
and Sarah Tennant and Robinson had
two each as the Salemites completed
a sweep of the season series with the Colonels.
A night later at the Salem Civic
Center Field Salem scored 17 first
inning runs before taking their foot off
the gas and coasting to an 18-4 win over
Hidden Valley. For the second game in
a row Salem’s pitcher also hit a home
run, but this time it was Robinson turning the trick.
She hit a three run homer off the Civic Center scoreboard in the
first inning and pitched four and a third
innings to pick up the win, fanning six.
Salem had 13 hits in this game.
Ciara Steele, Catherine Henderson,
Wells, Tennant and Robinson all had
two hits in the rout.
The Spartans are back in action
Friday with a River Ridge District
game at Patrick Henry. Next Tuesday,
April 16, they’ll host Pulaski at the
Civic Center.
