The Salem High volleyball team will open the season next week when the play host to Liberty Christian Academy at Salem High on Tuesday.

The Spartans have a new head coach in Amanda Hristov, although she’s far from new to the program. Amanda has been the junior varsity coach for the past four years so she’s quite familiar with the players. She’ll be assisted by John Hristov and Alicia Hunter is the new head junior varsity coach. “We’re coming off of an injury-plagued 2017 season in which we lost several key players to season-ending injuries,” said Hristov.

“However, Salem volleyball players never give up and fought every step of the way.” The Spartans finished 10-10 last year and figure to improve on that this season if everyone can stay healthy. The varsity team has six players returning, including seniors Janae Blakeney, Azyah Burnette, Telia Harris and Kinsey Ebel along with juniors Maddie Hall and Tanner Rowe.

“We will look to their experience, dedication and talent to lead us into the post-season,” said Hristov. Five juniors new to the varsity include Brooke Baxley, Meredith Hicks, Kennedy Lafon, Haley Steffan and Sybella Work, and Madi Winstead is the only sophomore on the varsity team. Salem scrimmaged Glenvar last week at Salem and the Spartans were scheduled to host Franklin County this week before opening the season. “We’re looking forward to a strong showing this year with a goal of heading to states,” said Hristov.
