Spartans, Highlanders have benefit games Friday

Salem and Glenvar High School will both host “benefit games” this Friday night in their final tuneup before the football regular season.

Salem will play host to Magna Vista beginning at 7 pm on Friday at Salem Stadium. It will be played like a game and there will be an admission charge to see the game.

Last Thursday at Salem Stadium the Spartans scrimmaged Brookville. The Bees scored four times and Salem scored twice in a controlled scrimmage with teams alternating a dozen plays.

“We have plenty of things to work,” said Salem coach Steve Magenbauer. Glenvar will play host to Blacksburg on Friday at Highlander Stadium. The Bruins return a solid team that beat Salem during the season last year, then lost to the Spartans in the playoffs as Salem made a run to the state championship.

“They’ll be tough,” said Clifford. “They have that (Tiquest) Terry kid that’s going to UVA. We scrimmaged them last year and we did pretty well.” The Glenvar-Blacksburg scrimmage is also a benefit game and will cost $6 with no passes honored. It will be played like a regular game except for kicking.

Last week the Highlanders traveled to Bluefield to play Graham High School and outscored the G-Men 14-10 in a controlled scrimmage. “Our kids played hard,” said Clifford. “We gave up a long bomb. We wanted to take a look at certain things and plug some holes. We weren’t worried about the score.”

The regular season will start August 24 when Salem hosts Amherst County and Glenvar goes to Galax. Andrew Lewis Middle School will open next Monday, August 20, when the Wolverines host Franklin County at Salem Stadium at 5 pm.

Glenvar Middle will play in a jamboree at Central Academy Saturday morning at 10 am, then open Thursday, August 23, at Cave Spring Middle.
