The Salem Civic Center community room was the site of the annual Salem High School football banquet on Wednesday, January 14. Jeff Sluss, the “Voice of the Spartans” was the Master of Ceremonies and Spartan coach Don Holter conducted the evening honoring players, coaches and support staff from the fall season.
The jayvee and varsity teams were introduced with special recognition to Jordan McCadden for Honorable Mention All-State honors and first team All-Region 4D accolades. Jake James and Tolin Saul were cited as second team all-region selections.
Winners of the community sponsored awards included two honors for James, a sophomore. He won the Spartan Bell for hardest hitter, as presented by the Salem Times-Register, and the Ole Mule Award for top offensive lineman. Saul was the recipient of the Spartan Silk Screen Scholar Athlete Award and DJ Lynch was presented the Tim Sutphin Award for volunteering and passion for the game.
The Salem Sports Foundation gives out four awards. Winners were McCadden for the Danny Wheeling Award, Ethan Millard for the Bob Barnett Hustle Award, Tanner Overstreet for the Roger Surber Award and Kevin Easley took home the Johnny Jones Award.
Holter presented five awards given by the team. James won the Iron Spartan Award for work in the weight room and McCadden is the Popeye Buchanan Special Teams Player of the Year. Dillon Williams was presented the Salem Spartan Character Award and two Scout Team Awards were given in honor of the late Adam Ward. Tyler Correll was presented the Defensive Scout Team Award and the Offensive Award went to Mike Tatoute.
Seniors presented coaches with special gifts and the evening closed with the benediction by Overstreet and Michael Crawley.
