The high school golf tournament season is upon us and Salem High is looking forward to shooting some low scores.
The Thorn Springs course will be the site of the River Ridge District tournament next Monday, hosted by Pulaski County. That will be for pride only, and maybe a trophy.
The following Monday, on September 27, it gets serious. That’s when the Region 4D tournament will be played at the Hidden Valley Country Club and only the top teams will advance.
Salem is playing some good golf down the stretch. Last week at Auburn Hills the Spartans tied Blacksburg for first place in a River Ridge match as both teams shot 292, or just four over par as a team. Macy Johnson led the Spartans with a three-under 69 while Katherine Ha shot 73 and Alex Rea and Taylor Davis both carded 75.
On Monday of this week the district teams played at Hunting Hills in a makeup round and Salem was third with a 302. Blacksburg shot three-over 283 on the par 70 Hunting Hills course while Hidden Valley edged Salem for second at 301. Ha led the Spartans with a one-under 69, Rea had 75, Trey Joyce had 77 and Johnson shot 81.
The Spartans will wrap up the regular season with two non-district matches this week, at Great Oaks in Floyd on Tuesday and at the Botetourt Golf & Swim Club today.
