
The Salem High softball team split two games Saturday when they host-ed the annual Salem Invitational. The Spartans lost to Alleghany, 9-4, but bounced back to shut out Radford, 12-0.
Against Alleghany Cora Grace Sparger pitched all seven innings, giv-ing up five hits and three earned runs. Sophomore Kayden Dalton had two hits while senior Caitlin Wells and freshman Olivia Crosswhite each had a hit and drove in runs for the Spartans.
Against Radford Crosswhite got her first varsity start in the circle and shut out the Bobcats on two-hits in a five inning slaughter-rule shortened game. She struck out eight.
Wells and freshman Evie Van Liew led the way with three hits each while Van Liew and fellow freshman Reagan Van Doren each had three runs batted in. Sophomore Piper Furmage had two hits and drove in a run.
Now 1-2, the Spartans are off for spring break, returning to the diamond on April 1st at Glenvar.
