The Salem High lacrosse teams swept William Byrd Tuesday in a girls’ boys doubleheader at Spartan Field in Salem. The girls opened with a 15-3 win and the boys followed with a 17-2 win over the visiting Terriers.
Brynn Bowen had 15 saves and Reese Redford led the scoring with four goals and two assists against the Terriers. Chloe Butt and Addi Blanchard had three goals and two assists each. Bailey Stratton added three goals and one assist.
The boys jumped to a 14-0 lead by the half against the Byrdmen before taking their foot off the gas in the second half. Kaidan Garst had seven goals for the Spartans while Jake Massey had four, Landon Miles three, Jackson Winiger two and Kyman Kinney had one. Trey Joyce only had to make two saves in the goal before taking the second half off.
Last Wednesday the Spartans swept Blacksburg, with the boys winning in Blacksburg and the girls winning at Spartans Field. The boys won 19-6 and everyone played. Landon Miles had eight goals before taking a seat and Jake Massey had five.
The girls beat the Bruins by a 17-3 score as Zoe Blair and Bailey Stratton had five goals each and Morgan Tew had three. Addi Blanchard had two goals and five assists while Chloe Butt had two goals and an assist. Brynn Bowen made eight saves in goal for the Spartans as the defense played well on the back line.
A night later the girls lost at Rockbridge, 11-3, to a strong Wildcats’ team. Butt had two goals and Blair had one. Bowen was strong in the cage with 18 saves.
“It was the best run that Rockbridge has received this season,” said Salem coach Maggi Pace. “We look forward to playing them again on the 16th because I feel like a few small adjustments can go a long way.”
The girls are scheduled to play at Hidden Valley on Friday before hosting Rockbridge next Monday to end the regular season. The Salem boys are home to Hidden Valley tonight and they’ll go to Rockbridge Monday.
